Economic analysis and modeling are core competencies at Deetken. We have more than 20 years’ experience providing economic analysis and modeling expertise to public and private sector organizations who use our best practice methods to support their decision-making. Our Economic Insights practice area is led by partners with advanced degrees in economics and public policy and we regularly recruit junior-level associates with degrees in economics, mathematics, computer science and statistics from Canada’s leading universities.
We have experience analyzing policy options for governments, as well as conducting industry and labour market analysis for public and private sector organizations. Service Offerings
Economic Analysis and Economic Modeling
Deetken excels at conducting financial and economic analysis of major initiatives, as well as economic modelling to help inform policy, strategic planning and budgeting processes, and to monitor and forecast. Our economic models are built to best practice, combining client-proprietary data with data from trusted sources such as Statistics Canada and BC Stats. Our models are also flexible, allowing them to be easily updated with the latest data and expanded to respond to a continuously evolving economic landscape.
Policy Options Analysis
Governments rely on our economic analysis, modelling and forecasting skills to make important legislative and policy decisions, whether around the introduction of proposed climate change policies, infrastructure development programs or international trade agreements. Our dynamic, all-economy model can model the impact of proposed legislative or policy decisions on businesses and citizens, as well as on jobs, GDP, taxes and fee revenues at the local, provincial and federal level throughout the economy.
Economic Impact Assessments (EIAs)
We have completed over one dozen complex economic impact studies in recent years for public and private sector clients. These projects have ranged from $40 million to $75 billion in proposed capital, operational and maintenance expenditures and have spanned numerous sectors, including oil and gas, construction, social services and motion picture production. Given our experience with EIAs, our project team can hit the ground running, delivering value immediately by leveraging our pre-configured EIA models, augmented by both public and client-proprietary datasets.
Industry Analysis
We have extensive experience creating industry-level economic baselines and economic profiles of various industries for multiple provincial ministries. For example, our work with Creative BC resulted in the creation of CIERA™, a powerful, proprietary measurement tool used to estimate the annual economic impact of British Columbia’s creative sector. Developed in partnership with the BC Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, CIERA™ is fully scalable and has been adopted by other provinces and territories to measure the economic impacts of the creative sector in their respective regions.
Labour Market Analysis
Deetken has a well-established labour market and workforce development practice. To date, we have conducted detailed analysis of close to 10 major sub-sectors in British Columbia, including the local government workforce in Metro Vancouver, construction, natural resources, health care, retail, food and beverage services, arts and culture, and value-added wood sectors. The focus of our labour market work is on generating a better understanding of labour market supply and demand and developing recommendations to improve labour productivity and source and skill workforces.
Policy Research & Design
Deetken draws on our background in economics, our advanced research capabilities and expertise in financial and economic modelling to help clients develop, refine and implement impactful public policies. Our policy research and design team is chaired by a leading economist and policy analyst and supported by a team of data-driven researchers, quantitative analysts and modellers. Our work has contributed to novel programs in the areas of business regulation, taxation, large-scale social programs, inclusive economic prosperity, technological adoption and innovation, and industry competitiveness.
