The Deetken family, originally from the Netherlands, immigrated to southern Germany in the early 1600s. In the years that followed, the family founded a successful milling business. The Deetken mill operated for close to 200 years and, during this time, had to constantly adapt to significant political, social and market shifts. Initially built as a sawmill, the business milled a variety of products over its lifetime (e.g. paper and flour) in response to changes in the market. The Deetkens were one of the largest employers in the Neckar-Odenwald district of Germany and served as leaders in their community.
Inspired by the Deetken family’s entrepreneurship, innovation, and devotion to their community, the co-founders of The Deetken Group adopted their name and, with it, a commitment to creative problem-solving and social impact.
The Deetken mill ceased operations in 1979. Two years later, it was purchased by a German charity. It continues to be used by this charity today.
